Address: 信義路二段198巷230號, 台北市, 106, 臺灣
City: Taipei, Taiwan
Nearest Station: Dongmen (東門)

Red bean cake (紅豆餅) is a popular Japanese dessert in Taiwan. In the Greater Taipei area (Taipei, New Taipei City, Keelung, and Taoyuan) this dessert is called car wheel cake (車輪餅).

My sister and I passed by a red bean cake vendor in front of Matsusei, a grocery store chain, in Da’an District.

As my sister and I were walking towards Da’an Forest Park from Yong Kang Beef Noodle, we caught a fragrant smell of something baking. A few steps later, we stopped and backtracked the scent to Guan Pei Red Bean Cake. Even though I was still full from the beef noodle soup, I didn’t want to pass on an opportunity for a car wheel cake! Continue reading

Taiwan: Beef & Tendon Noodle Soup

Restaurant: Yong Kang Beef Noodle (永康牛肉麵)
Address: 金山南路二段31巷17號, 台北市, 106, 臺灣
City: Taipei, Taiwan
Nearest Station: Dongmen (東門)

Yong Kang Beef Noodle is a restaurant on many Taipei must-eats lists, for beef noodle soup as the restaurant’s name says. So my sister and I went to the restaurant to check it out. The diners were mostly tourists from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

We ordered two small spicy beef and tendon noodle soup (hong shao niu rou jing mian), for NT$220. There was a big metal container on each table, full of suan cai (pickled Chinese cabbage). I scooped a big amount of suan cai onto my bowl! There were a few other sauces on the table as well; I can’t remember what they were. Continue reading

Taiwan: Lunch @ McDonald’s (麥當勞)

Remember how I visited McDonald’s in China back in September and noted how the menu was different? Well, how about McD in Taiwan?! We visited a location in Taipei across from Tamsui Station for lunch.

This McD has five floors! If the rooftop counts, that’s six floors! I think if you put each floor and laid it out next to each other, it’d be about the same size as a normal sized McD in the US. The first floor is where the kitchen and cashiers are, and the rest of the floors are dining floors. There’s a tiny PlayPlace on one of the floors, too.

As soon as we got to the cashiers, I looked for an item that wasn’t on the American menu. The big picture on the left side caught my eye (see below). Looks like they’re doing a Taste of America menu which runs until May 26th?! There was the New York with bagel, cheese, mayo, bacon, and chicken & California with five spice herbs and chicken.

mcdonalds - taste of america

My sister and I immediately shrugged our shoulders and gave a puzzled face at each other. I’m sure any other American from California or New York would do the same. How are the two chicken “burgers” representative of California or New York??!

My sister went with the classic spicy chicken, while I ordered the New York and apple pie. My sister raved about the apple pie when she went to Hong Kong several years ago. She even reminded me to get it at any Asian country when I went to HK and China last year. Unfortunately I didn’t, so this was my chance!

As always, McD does a fantastic job of presentation. The bagel looked exactly as advertised. Nooope.

The bagel was untoasted and chewy. All-in-all it was ingriguing; the chicken breast was moist and tender. I also tried a bite of the spicy chicken, and it was delicious and tasty. We had to admit that Taiwan does their chicken right.

McD’s apple pie in Asia does not even compare to the ones in the US. It is super crispy, flaky, light, and full of the same yummy, sweet, gooey, hot apple stuffing.

Taipei: Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken

Vendor: Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken (豪大大雞扒)
Address: Shilin Night Market Stall #50 (士林夜市50號攤)
City: Taipei, Taiwan
Nearest Station:Jiantan (劍潭)

Taipei has many night markets! You could say night markets are a way of life for the Taiwanese. They start to open when the schoolkids are out, and when everyone else gets off work.

The night market most popular with tourists is Shilin Night Market, and most vendors will start their post from the afternoon till 1am. If you’re getting there by MRT, Jiantan Station is the nearest station, not Shilin Station! More info regarding directions can be found here.

When we got to the night market, we saw lots of people carrying around a big piece of fried chicken! Each piece of fried chicken was NT$70 (apparently price has gone up the past few years). The line wrapped around the vendor, and you can see how they work their magic behind the stand. Taipei: Din Tai Fung @ Taipei 101

My sister and I met up with my college friend at Taipei 101 to have lunch at Din Tai Fung! My friend is actually a San Jose, CA native and happened to be in Taipei for a month visiting her relatives. My sister isn’t fluent in Mandarin and I only know English, so we were fortunate to hang out with my friend for the day!

Din Tai Fung is a famous Taiwanese dumpling chain. My family went to Din Tai Fung in Arcadia, California last December. So we had to check out DTF in Taipei! We were told DTF at Taipei 101 is the best one in Taipei, not the original location on Yongkang St. near Dongmen Station. Continue reading

Hong Kong: Fujian Fried Rice (aka Hokkien Fried Rice)

Restaurant: New China null
Address: 1743 Decoto Rd
City: Union City, California

My family had dinner with relatives at a Chinese restaurant near home. I usually order a vegetable dish, but this time I decided to go with a fried rice dish for this blog! There are so many different types of fried rice; I still have yet to try all of them!

I picked the fried rice dish called “Fujian Fried Rice” (福建炒飯). The name was unfamiliar to me, even though my parents said I’ve had it before, and that it comes with a thick, gravy-like sauce on top. And sure enough, it came with a thick sauce! Continue reading
