Stinky tofu is so smelly, from the time they bring it to you, to the first bite, to the aftertaste. My parents cannot stand eating it, so it was all mine!!
Stinky tofu is a form of fermented tofu that has a strong odor. It is a snack that is usually sold at night markets or roadside stands or as a side dish in lunch bars rather than in restaurants. In Taiwan, people usually eat the deep fried stinky tofu with the local sweet and sour pickled vegetable to relieve the greasiness. (Wikipedia)
we live quite close Neward and my husband misses it so badly since he used to eat it quite often when he was a child and we couldn’t really find it in the US so I’m happy to know there’s a chance I can get it for him :) but I think the smell is too much for me to handle ;)
There’s also stinky tofu at New China in Union City! But you could say that isn’t technically a Taiwanese restaurant. I first tried stinky tofu there, many years ago, but never ordered stinky tofu myself until last year in Richmond, BC. My parents never let me order it with them till last weekend! ;D
there is stinky tofu in a ton of places! you just have to know where to look. I’ve had stinky tofu twice in my life (i am not a fan) and it was in hong kong and china. yelp.com should be able to get you some good places to find it too! :)
I’ve also had stinky tofu a few weeks ago from Mama Liu. Mama Liu is food truck based in Milpitas, but they go to San Jose, Santa Clara, and Mountain View as well.
I love stinky tofu!!! Making sure to bookmark this restaurant on Yelp! Have you tried stinky tofu in mala broth? I think it is even more stinky in that form! :D
I might have, over the weekend! Went to a new Chinese restaurant in Fremont, and we had this big bowl of spicy chili soup and something in the dish tasted like stinky tofu!
